After making the initial Willy Wonka costume, and having that one out of the way, I had wanted to tackle one of the other numerous costumes that he wore in the movie.

I really liked the look of his red hat, so I chose to put together his outfit from his days in the candy shop. Most don't remember the costume, and with good reason.. he was only on screen for less than a minute! So in case you forgot, this was all the reference that I had to work with.

While I tried my best to copy the look of the coat, I was always looking at an uphill battle. The actual coat was a soft material, with machine dyes polka dots dyed into the fabric. Without industrial equipment, there was no way I could do this. My best bet was to hand brush each dot on by hand. Aside from it taking 4 weeks to do, it was not going to give me the exact look I wanted.

Because it was painted, it created a flat layer of paint, on the surface of the fabric. This would not allow light to affect it the same way that a soft material has. Where it would normally create shadows and darker shades of color, it simply has the same shade of color all around. So the coat actually looks more like a plastic shower curtain!

I am happy, and unhappy with the coat. I am unhappy because there was no possible way to perfect it, yet I'm pleased because I finally made the alternate look I had wanted to do.

The fur coat costume is just an updated version if the ribbon cutting ceremony outfit, from the original Wonka section. I now have an actual res satin hat, and the different clothing underneath. While it's not what he actually wears under his red coat, it is actually impossible to tell what it is, since there are no photos of it. But it is definatley not the traditional red pinstriped costume, from the movie.
